150 of 365 T Linden on The Copper Robot

When T Linden started talking about 45 year old housewives dressing their avatars I pretty much stopped being able to hear a word he said. Way to marginalize and offend your users. Asshat.

149 of 365 I was born without the gene for patience

I have no patience with my own need to rest and recuperate. I may not be the most active person in the entire world but not being able to do what I want to do makes me really crabby. Sitting at the computer is not at all comfortable so I will try to make the most of what little time I have in world. I wanted to explore and take some great photos today but somehow it was not working out at all. Laying on a tree that hangs over the water surrounding Harbour was relaxing so that is what I did.

and photo....taaa daaah.

thank you ladies and gentlemen I am here all week.

148 of 365: Grand Odalisque, Body Image and the ER

When the Grand Odalisque by Light Waves first hit SL I was one of the people who took one look at her and shuddered. Perhaps her enormous breasts and stomach roll hit way to close to home for me. She is real, alarmingly so. I certainly appreciate the incredible technique used to create this sculpture. But, I was not one of the adoring throng who stood around and marveled at her beauty.

When I happened upon a copy of Grand Odalisque in-world today I sat down and looked at her for a good long time to decide if my opinion had changed at all over time. To be honest when I see this woman every single one of my body image issues rises up in my throat and all I want to do is run away. And then I want to drown my body image issues in dulce de leche straight from the can. Oh that last bit is not true. I prefer oreos. ok ok ok...stop

The point is? I remain one of the few who do not find this statue enjoyable to look at in the least. But sweet Grand Odalisque it is me, not you.

~~~~
I have a Springer Spaniel named Chloe. She is about a year and a half old and very true to her breed, which means she is "spirited" if you like her and "a maniac" if you do not. Last night she got underfoot as I was walking down the stairs and I fell down about half the length of our steep staircase. I landed on my (amply padded) arse, hard. So hard that my entire family came running. I must have screamed but honestly I don't remember that part. What I do remember is the searing pain. When I got up this morning my entire body was sore and frankly MY ASS HURT. I spent close to 5 hours in the Emergency Room at our local hospital today because everyone I talked to worried that I had broken my tailbone. After exposing me to various forms of radiation the cracker jack team of medical professionals determined that I sprained my ass. Yes. That is the official diagnosis. I kid you not.
And now the difficult task of linking my sprained ass to the Grand Odalisque begins. (You think this blogging stuff is easy? Do ya?)
My body may be too fat for my liking and right now I may have a sprained ass, but the truth is I live a charmed life. I have great family and wonderful friends. ummmmm...so far this linking bit is falling short of the mark.
Dammit.
My ass hurts.
Glyph Graves Art Walk -- Tomorrow at 3PM
From my friend White Lebed -- last minute notice of a fun event. Check it out!
What: Glyph Graves: Incomplete Recollections
When: Monday, March 29th - 3pm SLT (art walk with Glyph Graves)
Where: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Kolor/118/133/51
Iono Allen's wonderful machinima of the exhibit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AoBHxLyzcwE
Summary: Glyph Graves is closing his personal show covering (incompletely) 3 years in SL! The last day is Sunday, March 4th!
About the art show:
It is hard to find those who are even remotely interested in SL arts and are not familiar with Glyph's art. He produced some of the most photographed, filmed, collected, not to mention immitated artworks.
He is known as one of the most productive artists, constantly enventing new scripts, perfecting textures, exploring new ideas and concepts. However, like many great artists, he is so passionate about moving ahead and creating new art, he often neglects showing his old works. It was my long-term dream to dig deep into Glyph's inventory and bring back some of his old masterpieces, present them side by side in one place -creating sort of a visual art timeline.
How to experience:
- Please, turn off the streaming music and turn on the SL sounds as a few pieces depend on SL generated sound/music.The sound is in almost all cases generated note by note and mapped either from wind or from interaction of an avatar or mobile object.
About the tour:
The tour will start here at 3pm
If you can't come to the artist tour, here is the suggested self-guided tour.
1. Once upon a time, and not that long - only 3 years ago, a fresh egg was rezzed in one of SL sandboxes - this one
Can you think of a more humble traditional beginning? Actually if you look closely, you will see that even back than he was pushing for something unusual
2. Glyph's 1st Exhibition
You probably missed it when it happened, didn't you? And unless you know the trick you can easily miss it again. But it really worth visiting!
Come here and click on a cool looking black/green prim to tp up there. After you are done, you can just fly out - the walls are phantom. Don't look for a tp downstairs, may the next time...
3. The Garden
Located right under the 2. or here. This section contains artworks which were presented during the famous Garden of NPIRL event in 2008 (curated by Bettina Tizzy).
4. Inventory Airing
Right next to the Garden you will find half sim size platform full of various sculptures and intallations created in 2008. Some of those objects are well known popular sculptures which have been successfully displayed all over SL, others are little known, some have never been displayed.
Now, you might wonder, why some of those cool little sculptures have been kept a secret? No good reason really, other than the fact that Glyph is as good at making art as he is bad at keeping up with organizing his evergrowing sizable inventory. And yes, he plans to do it (but, first he needs to finish this new exciting thing he is working on.. hehe)
Anyway, this portion of the exhibition looks like a typical messy art work room (or as Glyph puts it - an eclectic selection) full of interesting things to discover. Some of the rare and unique objects are for sale. If you like something, grab it - you might never see it again.
5. Russian corner
Why Russian? because the artworks you will see here made their debute during Glyph's self-curated Russian Archipelago exhibition back in 2008. During this show photographers and film makers discovered how camera-friendly Glyph's art is. You probably have seen pictures and machinimas showing these objects. However, the originals have stayed in Glyph's inventory ever since that summer - now it is your chance to see how they really look like.
6. BIW Award winning installation URban Renewal
For the best experience - start right here  and WALK through it, don't cam or fly! If you do it right you will see why!
This installation is unique in many ways.
I will just point out one very important detail - this installation will not work if you visit it during a high lag perios if too many avatars are around. However, you need to bring a few friends with you since the installation reacts on presence avatars depending on number of the guests. If that sounds a bit confusing, it supposed to be - and wait till you actually experience the room..
Here is the notecard from Glyph with more details (you might want to visit the room first, before you read it)
7. Art Simularca
Another group of well known popular sculptures which were displayed in Tayzia Abattoir NMC Gallery.
8. Memories of Summer
The large round room in the middle. This is the complete display which was made for the Soleil show in July 09 (curated by White Lebed). An impression of Australian coastal forest at dusk.
The credits
Kolor Fall - the sims owner and one of the most patient people in SL
White Lebed - the show curator (meaning the one who was begging, nagging, bargaining, threatening Glyph into finishing this installation)
Iono Allen - the machinima maker
146 of 365 Blogger Party and M Linden Exhibit
Today was a day of huge events. Sadly, SL was hating on me so I kept crashing and did not get to enjoy the parties as much as I would have liked.
This is the Blogger party. Its funny how the people who attend these parties morph over time. I remember the first Blogger Party I went to ages ago. Vint Falken, Timothy Lillihook, Jellybean Madison and Hawksrock Gunawan, and Wrath Paine were all there. I can't remember the last time I saw any of those folks in SL. I used to know everyone at the blogger parties. Now? I feel like I know a small number of people but mostly I think I should hang out with bloggers more and get to know them. What a great bunch of people.
The photo of M Linden above was taken by my friend JayJay Zifanwe, who is the art promoter at the University of Western Australia Campus in SL. I tried to take a picture during the short time I was at M Linden's exhibit opening today. With 78 people in the sim at the time trying to do anything was a challenge. I heard M took questions from the crowd and answered in voice. The one question I saw just before I crashed the second time was "why are you doing art instead of working on making the grid stable." Irony much?
I would be so happy if SL could support big events and by that I mean events with several hundred in attendance. Now, that capability would be a serious paradigm shifter.
Sometimes I just want to be quiet with my own thoughts. Its really hard to explain that to people.
143 of 365
I had a great day in RL today. A whole bunch of things that have been stressing me for literally months came together and the results were very good. I feel as if a cloud has lifted, quite literally.
I spent some time throwing prims around today and I think I have a good idea for the sky box. The structure will come together with a little experimentation. The texturing is stumping me just a little. The textures are going to make or break this idea, which is pretty much always true.
Who knows where this is going to lead. I hardly ever end up where I think I was going when I start to build.
140 of 365: Barbed Wire Fencing
Being a blogger for as long as I have means people get to know your name and form opinions about you based on your writing and images. I am surprised when people don't realize that familiarity with a blogger's work does not equate to fully understanding them as a human being.
Does that even make sense?
Sometimes people are amazingly wonderful to me because of my blogging and other times people are perfectly rotten to me because of my blogging. While I do enjoy the positive feedback quite a bit, the negative takes me by surprise each and every time. Its stupid, I know. My inner 7th grade girl just wants to be liked by everyone. Sadly, she was disappointed in junior high school and for sure she is disappointed in Second Life. It is enough to make a person want to put up barbed wire fencing around her heart.
Exploring the Underwater Garden Pipora Pepora
I visited a place called Garden *Pipora Pepora* this evening with some friends. It is a lovely quiet place you may enjoy. Have a look.
139 of 365 Cookie Bears by Sway!
I am not a person who is all that into "cute." What I mean by that is I am not really into cuddly toys or frivolous fun things like small dragons attached to my mouth, t shirts with witty sayings about how I live in a drama free zone, will steal your boyfriend for shoes or love my kitty. Not that I am serious all the time, but I am not someone who cooooooooos or squeeeeeeeeeeeeees all that often. Which is why it is utterly surprising to me that Cookies Bears by Sway made me say "awwwwwwwwwwww" in my living room as I drank my early morning coffee.
These adorable bears are animated to blink, move or otherwise entertain. You can get bears that ride bikes, fly in a hot air balloon, roast marshmallows over a campfire or just about anything you can imagine. They are fairly low prim -- the photographer bear is just 17 prims on his own although the tools of his trade do add more prims.
I had to think of these as blogger bears. The attention to detail is just great! The cookie on girl blogger bear's desk has left crumbs and the frame holds a picture of the boy blogger bear. Amazingly, her laptop appears to be open to Chestnut's Choices on New World Notes. Oh, ok...not really.
You can get a bear that declares your love and the nice thing is the bears are available in several different options and you can pick from a few languages as well.
This vignette just killed me! My husband is a huge football fan. His hometown is Portsmouth and if you follow the Premier League you will understand why some members of my household are in mourning. I have listened (with feigned interest) to the daily trials and tribulations of the demise of Portsmouth for some time now. Perhaps I should show my husband this fun cookie bear football game to cheer him up! The animations are just adorable and you can pick from Germany, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands. What no team USA? I am shocked, shocked I tell you!
137 of 365: Voice Post!
Today on plurk Sehra posted a little sample of her voice and asked if she sounded like people expected her to sound. I followed her lead and posted a voice sample to plurk and then I had the idea to do a little voice blog post. If you ever wondered what I sound like in RL click the link below and listen to me ramble on for a minute.
I say "so" a lot.
135 of 365: Furniture for Your Linden Home
My friend Ari Blackthorne is a multi-talented guy. Early this morning he dropped yet another gift on me, which happened to be a set of furniture he made for the Asian style Linen homes. In the folder was a LM to his store so I took a little trip to see what else Ari had created.
If you need quality furniture for your Linden home you can fully outfit your space for just 100 prims. Heck, even if you don't live in a Linden home and you need low prim furniture that is *cough* compatible with your bits, then take a trip to Zodiac House. You will also find spas, fountains, cuddle rugs and just about anything you might want for your home or garden.
134 of 365: RFL Clothing Fair
Zha and I shopped the RFL Clothing Fair a bit today. I experienced essentially no lag whatsoever, except when someone with an ARC of 6000 walked by me. Otherwise it was easier to navigate than any Fair I have been to in almost 3 years of attending these events. Kudos to the sim builders and organizers of the event.
I have some thoughts about RFL rolling around in my head. I want to think some and maybe talk to people privately before I say things that are going to piss off large groups of people. If you are interested in talking about the efficacy of raising funds inside SL drop me an IM inworld. I would like to hear what others think to help me flesh out my own thinking.
133 of 365: Creating a Mood
I was on a sim with lots of rain and it felt dark and cold. This image is the result of the environment I was in rather than my mood. I actually had a lovely family weekend
Holocaust Survivor Story
I traveled to Ukraine and Poland last summer with members of my family to visit places where our ancestors were rounded up, put on trains and sent to die in gas chambers created by the Nazis for the express purpose of killing people like me. It was an experience I am still processing emotionally.
My grandfather left Poland before the war and came to New York, leaving his wife and child behind. Seven long years later he had saved enough money to send for my grandmother and my uncle. My father was the first of our family to be born in America.
Leaving everyone they loved behind proved to be a stroke of luck for my grandparents because their families and most everyone from their town ended up on those trains or were shot as they stood on the edge of a mass grave they were forced to dig themselves.
There are lots of people who have stories of the Holocaust like mine -- second hand tales of the deaths of relatives we never knew. The truth is our stories are not nearly so powerful as the words of someone who lived through the events.
Fanny Starr is a Holocaust survivor who regularly speaks in Second Life. This past week she was interviewed by Pookey Amsterdam and a local Denver Television station. Please go here and read the news story. More importantly, please watch the video and listen to Fanny. Her story is in her voice as much as her words.
127 of 365: Chestnut is at it again
When we got our parcel on Harbour we were pretty focused on creating the space on the ground. I rezed a sky box so we could have a private place for ourselves but it was always meant as a temporary thing. Now that the build on the ground is in place I keep looking at the sky box and wanting something different. What? I have no idea but a box isn't it.
I started looking at prefab houses thinking I could mod one into something that would work for us. I looked at about 323,234,678 prefabs. I am stunned at the poor quality work that some people are selling for very high prices. I looked at a lot of houses and thought "I can make this myself." But in all honesty, I am feeling a little (a lot) pressured for time and I don't really want to build a new house.
There are a lot of amazing creations out there, don't get me wrong. There are many realistic houses with attention to detail that is just incredible. But I sure don't want a kitchen or a bathroom or a closet. I want a structure that suggests "home" with places to sit and to cuddle but I am not a fan of replicating RL architecture in SL. I have a 2 story colonial in RL and I just don't need another one.
What is a person to do? You guessed it.
I will let you know if anything worthwhile comes of this.
126 of 365: Great build to explore - Alpha Point
The creators of Alpha Point, Masoon Ringo and Sweetlemon Jewell, say the sim is still under construction. I found plenty to see and will certainly go back to see this dark, mysterious art build again.
If you are looking for a place to hang out and have a thoughtful conversation or a dance Alpha Point is a great choice. There are spots for meditation and a cute table where you can enjoy a cup of pixel tea. Photographers will certainly find ample inspiration in the shadows and light that play across the build's interesting architecture. I hope you enjoy your visit as much as I enjoyed mine.
