Ten years later
Ok. I'm going to get political here. Fair warning.
Things have changed a lot since that sunny September morning 10 years ago. That was the day that everything changed, not just here in New York but in America. I am not talking just about the police that guard my city today because of "credible and specific" warnings of new threats to kill. No, I am really talking about how we feel vulnerable now and more importantly that ever present threat "the economy."
The men who flew planes into the World Trade Center wanted to send the United States a message. The message was this "you are vulnerable and we can hurt you badly without difficulty," Message received. We know it. But the question I pose to our leaders and to my neighbors is how do you react to that? What is the best way to stay strong and live your life without fear?
I will say this - more killing is not the answer. The wars we are waging do not make us safer. I believe they make us weaker. Spending money we do not have to kill more people does not make New York City, or any city in the world, safer. Killing begets hatred which begets more killing. Its like a case of the school yard bully on steroids and there is no peace and happiness and liberty for all at the end. There is more death and more threats and more fear.
Enough.
The world economy is falling apart and I am of the opinion that much of that traces directly back to the day ten years ago when the planes struck the towers. The bad guys are winning because we are responding with force instead of finesse. All the while, my friends and family are unemployed and hurting while our politicians fight about what day to stage a speech instead of figuring out how to make our country strong again.
Enough.
Please read my story about "where I was on 9/11." It is one of my most personal blog posts and one of my favorites.
